TECHNICAL SEMINAR ON ITALIAN SLATE

February 27, 2008

Technical Seminar “Slate: tradition and innovation of a material and its use in architecture”
AIA Pasadena & Foothill Chapter
Conference Hall of the Assistance League of Pasadena
Pasadena, California
February 27th 2008

The Italian Trade Commission of Los Angeles, in collaboration with the AIA Chapter (American Institute of Architects) in Pasadena & Foothill, organized a technical seminar on the use and application of Italian slate from the Region of Liguria.

This seminar was registered with the National AIA Headquarters as part of the ongoing continuing education programs sponsored by the Italian Trade Commission. AIA members and non members can get professional educational credit for having participated in the event. US Architects are required to have a minimum of 18 CES credits to maintain their professional licenses as architects. The technical seminar on the use and application of Italian slate on Green Architecture was good for 1 LU credit.

The seminar was authored and presented by Architect and Professor Giorgio Mor, from the University of Genoa School of Architecture (Italy).

A fabulous Italian dinner catered by Celestino Drago, one of the most renowned Italian chefs in Los Angeles, was served to the 45 attending guests who were able to savor some of the best recipes of the Region of Liguria.

Arch. Joseph Catalano, President of the AIA Pasadena & Foothill Chapter, welcomed the audience and introduced Ms. Paola Bellusci, Director of the Italian Trade Commission in Los Angeles, who briefly described the importance of the collaboration with the AIA and the opportunities offered to American Architects to gain a deeper insight in the use of Italian natural stones through technical seminars and specific presentations on materials quarried in Italy, such as the slate in the Region of Liguria. She then introduced the speaker.

Through an interesting and detailed Power Point presentation, Professor Mor explained the origin and natural history of slate, its technical properties, the use of this natural stone in past and present architecture and its numerous possibilities of application in future projects. The presentation was followed by a lively Q&A session, during which Professor Mor was supported by the technical experience of the representative of the Consortium L.A.P.I.S., who answered the specific questions posed by the architects.

The Consortium L.A.P.I.S. also contributed to the seminar with a display of slate samples of diverse finishing and a sink basin. At the end of the event, all samples were donated to the AIA Pasadena & Foothill Chapter.
